Cypripedium formosanum is native only to the high mountain habitat of Taiwan. As such, it is a species that is easily damaged by early frosts in the Spring as it typically emerges quite early.

USDA Growing Zones
Recommended optimal USDA zones are 6 to 7 (Perhaps 8) with protection from early frosts by locating them under large conifers. The Pacific Northwest coastal climate of Northern California to Washington would suit this species nicely. In more northern climates (zone 5 and colder) growing in pot culture with some type of cold frame protection in winter would be recommended.

Soil/Media/Growing Requirements Likes a neutral to slightly sub acid (pH 6.0-7.5) soil/media. They require 2 to 3 hours direct early morning or late afternoon sun and be in dappled shade the remainder of the day.
